Kazimir Malevich, a pioneer of geometric abstraction said "Colour is the essence of painting which the subject always killed" and I suppose I partly agree. I've always thought that the most interesting paintings live somewhere between the pure abstract and realism, and this is where I try to paint. Here the viewer is asked to participate in the painting, filling in the details. As a painter this frees me up to play with colour and form, and to try and capture the emotional essence of a scene.
